How to Take the Perfect Photo for Your Pet Portrait

A great reference photo makes all the difference when creating a portrait that truly captures your pet’s personality. Here are some simple tips to help you get the best possible shot—no fancy camera required!

1 / Find the Best Light

Natural light works wonders!

Take photos near a bright window or outside in open shade.

Try to avoid harsh sunlight or dim indoor lighting as they can distort colours and hide details.

Face your pet toward the light for clear, even illumination.

2 / Get on Their Level

Kneel or sit so you’re eye-level with your pet. This angle feels more natural and shows off their expression beautifully.

3 / Use Portrait Mode (If You Can!)

Portrait Mode helps your pet stand out by softly blurring the background.
Just make sure there’s good lighting so the focus stays sharp.

4 / Treats + Toys = Magic

Use a treat or favorite toy to get their attention.
Hold it near the camera lens so they look toward it, and be patient — a few tries will usually do the trick.

5 / Choose Clear, Sharp Photos

Pick photos that are bright, in focus, and show your pet’s true colours. Clear eyes and visible markings help me bring them to life in their portrait.

Bonus Tip

If you can, send a few different angles or expressions — it helps me capture your pet’s personality perfectly.
